NORTHUMBRIA LARDER’S NEW CHAIRMAN (November 2006)

Northumbria Larder, the North East of England Regional Food Group, announces the appointment of Jack Jeffery, CBE, as its new Chairman.

A distinguished figure in the water industry and public health sector nationally and internationally, Mr Jeffery was educated at Stanley Grammar School, County Durham, and King’s College, Newcastle, in the University of Durham. He graduated with a B.Sc in Chemistry and Bacteriology and an M.Sc in Applied Science.

His main career was first as a research scientist with the National Coal Board, then with South West Suburban Water Company as chemist and bacteriologist and with North West Surrey Water Company, where he served as Managing Director from 1977 to 1995 and as Chairman from 1990 to 2000.

He has maintained close links with his native North East during his long career, which has seen him appointed to leading roles as chairman, director, and president of many private and industry bodies in the UK and abroad. His water industry and public health posts have included the chairmanship of the Water Companies’ Association, President and Chairman of the Freshwater Biological Association, President of the Institution of Water Officers, Member of the Stockholm Water Prize Nominating Committee, and Chairman of the Royal Institute of Public Health, which post he held until earlier this year.

His North East appointments since his return to the region include a directorship of Durham County Waste Management Limited and an active connection with Newcastle University. He is a Trustee of the University’s Development Trust, Chairman of Convocation, Member of Court and Member of the Development Council.

Mr Jeffery has also recently been appointed a Director of County Durham Environmental Trust.

He said this week he was looking forward to his new role as Chairman of Northumbria Larder.

“ I want to meet as many members as possible to get their views on the future of the organisation and share with them my thoughts on the direction I think we should be taking, ’’ Mr Jeffery said.
