MORE DELICIOUS DELIGHTS FROM DODDINGTON DAIRY (MAY 2006)
Doddington Dairy, based on the Maxwell family farm near Wooler in north
Northumberland, continues to develop its highly successful range of ice
creams.
The company, which is a strong supporter of Northumbria Larder, has joined
forces with Alnwick Rum, an NL associate member, to create the Alnwick Rum
Truffle ice cream. The truffles, made by the Maxwells, are blended into a
rich Alnwick Rum-laced chocolate ice cream which meets with the wholehearted
approval of Ian Linsley, who runs the rum business. He says "Doddington
Dairy have perfected a recipe that brings out the distinctive flavour of
both the rum and the chocolate and this is definitely one type of Alnwick
Rum truffle that will melt in the mouth". The ice cream is sold in 120ml
cartons at selected visitor attractions, retail outlets and delicatessens
throughout the North East.
Doddington have also developed an exclusive range of "From a Flower" luxury
ice creams, which are available nationally. The new range has been short
listed by The Grocer magazine for a gold award for Best New Product by a
Brand.
The ice cream is said to be totally different from any other on the market
and comes in four natural flavours, saffron and cardamom, rose, heather
honey and orchid vanilla.
The heather honey is sourced locally from Chain Bridge Honey Farm run by
Willie Robson and his family, one of the largest independent producers of
honey in the country, based at Horncliffe, near Berwick. Robsons, like the
Maxwells, have been members of Northumbria Larder from its earliest days.
The "From a Flower" range comes in 490ml midnight blue square boxes and the
recommended retail selling price is around £4.99 per carton. It will be
available in specialist food stores and delicatessens, including Harrods
Food Hall.
The Maxwell family have exceptionally innovative ideas and their previous
successes have included the introduction of Newcastle Brown Ale ice cream in
2003 and, two years later, Pineapple Sage and Coconut for The Sage,
Gateshead.
Commenting on their new "Flower" range, Neill Maxwell, director of
Doddington Dairy, says "When ice cream was invented it required an ice house
on a country estate, exotic fruits in carefully-tended glass houses, many
servants and unlimited wealth. Through our new range we hope we have
rediscovered the roots of ice cream and reinvented it as a high-class,
distinctive product, a long way from convenience freezer food or a
jumbo-sized cinema interval treat."
