AN INVITATION TO MEET FREE RANGE, RARE BREED PIGS (June 2007)

One of the North’s most family-friendly organic farms is to hold an Open Day on Sunday, June 10, following the success of a similar event last year.

G & S Organics, of Rock Midstead Farm, five miles north of Alnwick just off the A1, have arranged a six-hour programme of activities to keep adults and children happy and better informed about life down on the farm.

First, there is a guided farm tour, not too strenuous, which enables visitors to have a close-up view of three types of rare breed pigs – Tamworth, Saddleback and Old Spot – which have the run of the place, together with other farm animals.

From about 11am onwards there will be the start of a hog roast and barbecue which is likely to go on until about three o’clock, during which time Lee Gray, joint partner in the farm business with Beth Sutherland, will demonstrate the art of sausage making. Beth will also show off her breadmaking skills.

Other attractions include craft stalls, selling locally-made jewellery, paintings and designer T-shirts and other things, to the accompaniment of music provided by two local bands, whose repertoire is wide enough to suit most people, according to Beth.

While the adults are tucking into roast pork and sausages there will be organised games for the kids, plus a play area for them to let off more steam. The farm shop will also be open for food and refreshments.

G & S Organics now supply their organic box scheme to customers from Berwick in the north to Newcastle in the south. The boxes contain meat raised on the farm, vegetables largely grown at Rock Midstead, organic bread baked fresh on the day of delivery, and organic eggs and milk.
