Map and directions

Westerhope Village owes its beginnings to a group of men who in 1890 formed the Northern Allotment Society - the aim being to move away from the crowded back to back terraced houses of Newcastle "to further the growth of fruit and flowers and the cultivation of small holdings with objects both educational and practical". So the original freeholders came "west in hope" and in 1895 called their new community Westerhope Village.

In 1956 John and Florence Thomson also came "west in hope" from Jarrow with their 5 year old son to start their bakery business - at the time wondering if this small village would be able to support them.

Who would have thought that nearly 50 years later Westerhope Village would be a westerly suburb of Newcastle with the A1 whizzing past its boundary.

Who would also have thought that that small bakery is still there producing a wide range of speciality breads to both the local community and also selected wholesale customers and is home to the world famous Broon Ale Bread - still very popular since its inception in the late 1980s.

Ian is a second generation Master Baker and when asked will tell you he has the best job in the world. Together with his wife Jan their pride in their products is plain to see. Using traditional processes and techniques their products are of truly superior quality and with their firm commitment to training this must make them one of the few true artisan bakers in the North East.

Baking daily the shop is stocked with a range of breads, flatties and morning goods, scones, pies, pasties sausage rolls, traybakes, biscuits, and fresh cream cakes. Sandwiches and wraps made fresh each day. Wedding and celebration cakes are made to order, together with personalised cakes using the customer’s photo, logo or picture.
