Northumbria Larder is the North East's prime source of regional Fine Food and Drink. It consists of independent food and drink producers in County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley.
It was set up in 2002 following the foot and mouth outbreak which caused the cancellation of most of the Farmers' Markets in the region, threatening the livelihoods of farmers, food producers and suppliers. Northumbria Larder exists to encourage, develop and help grow its members in their aspirations of producing the finest Food and Drink the region can offer.
Northumbria Larder has over 60 members. It is recognised by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Food From Britain (FFB) and One NorthEast as the regional food group.
It is a non-profit making association, which aims to promote and support regional food producers with a view to increasing their sales and profitability. It also seeks to create more jobs in the food industry while enhancing the reputation and standing of the region's indigenous food and drink. Many traditional methods have survived and exist alongside more modern means of production, processing and presentation.
As the result of the official backing it has received together with growing public recognition, Northumbria Larder is now able to bring regional food products to a wider audience. Apart from Farmers' Markets, Northumbria Larder is often able to offer promotional support to members wishing to take part in other events both within and outside the North East. These include major agricultural shows, flower festivals, craft shows and Christmas fayres at venues provided by a range of organisations, such as the National Trust. Further a field, Northumbria Larder has enabled members to attend national and international Trade food and drink exhibitions, with notable success.
In its short history Northumbria Larder has already done much to promote and develop food and drink businesses in the region and there is a continuing demand for membership from food producers who can see what Northumbria Larder has achieved for others.
